This bass viol was made in 2024 by Lukas Pawelka at the workshop of the Ole Bull academy. It was inspired by an instrument crafted by Ventura di Francesco Linarolo in Venice in 1585. With its unusually large and wide body it produces a very deep, resonant sound that makes it ideally suited for basso continuo in early music.
This special Hardanger lute with four resonance strings is a joint research project of lute maker Lars Tørressen and Felemakeriet / Lukas Pawelka. Aim of the project was to develope a completely new musical instrument, which can be used for playing Norwegian folk music. The instrument combines the playing feel of a regular lute with a richness in overtones known from the Hardanger fiddle. This project was subsidised by Vestland fylkeskommune, Bergen kommune and Senter for folkemusikk og folkedans.
